构建多元教学策略,培养学生阅读素养 —牛津版初中Unit 6 Bird watching阅读课答辩
英语阅读教学是英语课程单元知识的主要呈现形式,在课程中占有重要地位,也是近年来教招考试中出现频率较高的考查形式。考试中,通常会要求考生根据给定教材进行课程设计,因此我们需要知道如何设计好一堂阅读课,如何在考试中脱颖而出。本文以牛津版初中八上Unit 6 Birdwatching阅读课为例进行教学设计,该教学设计以学生现阶段的交际需求和认知发展水平为目标,着重培养学生的综合语言运用的能力。
Greeting:
Good morning, dear judges. I’m number 1. It’s my great honor and pleasure to be here sharing my lesson with you. My topic today is “Birdwatching” and my presentation consists of the following parts, the analysis of teaching material and students, teaching procedures and so on.
1 Analysis of teaching materials
This lesson is chosen from English Book of Oxford Shanghai Edition of junior high school, grade 8, Unit 6 Birdwatching, the reading part. After learning this lesson, students are able to know something about rare birds and natural reserves. And students will have the awareness to protect the rare animals. Meanwhile, their reading and speaking abilities will be developed.
2 Analysis of students
Our students in junior have strong curiosity to know new topic, so they will be interested in learning something about natural reserves. But they are a little bit shy and sometimes may not concentrate on the class, daring to share their own opinions, so I will arrange activities to encourage them to cooperate with classmates and speak English actively in class.
3 Analysis of teaching aims
According to the English curriculum standard and the analysis of teaching material and students, I set the following teaching aims:
(1) Knowledge aim:
Students can understand the short passage and master the news words, such as prevent, tourist, provide and so on.
(2) Ability aim:
Students can get some basic reading skills, like catching the main idea of the passage through fast reading and detailed information from the passage through careful reading.
(3) Emotional aim:
Students will be more interested in learning English and have the awareness to protect the rare animals.
4 Analysis of teaching key points and difficult points
Key point:
Students can gain fully information about Zhalong natural reserve, such as the birds in Zhalong and what the government does to protect the things in it.
Difficult Point:
Students will know the importance of cooperating with their classmates and have more interest in speaking English in class.
5 Analysis of teaching methods and learning methods
After those analyses, I’d like to talk about my teaching methods and learning methods. In this class, I’ll mainly use “Task-based language teaching methods” and “Communicative teaching approach”. As for learning methods, I will lead them to discuss in groups, and learn to communicate with people so as to become the real host of the class.
6 Analysis of teaching aids
To interest students,, I will use multi-media and pictures.
7 Analysis of teaching procedures
Then it comes to the most important part of my presentation, the analysis of teaching procedures.
Step 1 Warming-up
After greeting students, I will show Ss some pictures about Sichuan Natural reserve that protects pandas, with which students may be more familiar. They will talk actively and I will tell them there is another special natural reserve for us. Then lead the topic of “Zhalong- a special place”, which protects rare birds.
In this way, the teacher can arouse students’ interests of this special natural reserve which may be new for them.
Step 2 Pre-reading
Before reading I will play the video and present some pictures of Zhalong Natural reserve to students and ask Ss to predict what will be mentioned in the article. By doing this, students can have a general background of the topic which lays a good foundation to the next step.
Step 3 While-reading

I will ask Ss to read the passage quickly and finish the task B1, find the words in the article, and match the words with the meanings. (d, e, f, a, c, b)
Then finish the task B2, find the general idea of each paragraph and fill in the blanks with the correct letters. And check the answers with them. (e, a, d, b, c)

Paragraph 3 Birds in Zhalong are in danger
Paragraph 4 What the Birdwatching Society members do
Paragraph 5 More people can help count and describe the birds
Through this activity, Ss can find some basic information about Zhalong natural reserve and their fast reading skills can be practiced as well.
2. careful reading
After that I will give students more time to read the article again carefully, and do the task B3 to make sure the sentences true or not.
1. Zhalong is an important wetland in the world. (T)
2. Birds can find food and cover in Zhalong. (T)
3. The birds in Zhalong live in large cages. (F)
4. Most birds are active at night. (F)
5. Forty percent of cranes live in other parts of the world. (F)
6. The Chinese government has made laws to protect wildlife. (T)
7. Zhalong needs more people to feed the birds. (F)
8. Studying Zhalong helps us learn about protecting wildlife. (T)
Through careful reading, students can understand this passage deeply. Students can also learn to grasp the detailed information quickly and correctly.
Step 4 Post-reading
As for the post-reading part, I will ask students to make a group discussion about how to protect the rare animals in five minutes and invite some students to share their opinions.
This activity can help to achieve the emotional aims that students will have the awareness to protect the animals and achieve the difficult points that students will know the importance of cooperating with their classmates and have more interests in speaking English in class.
Step 5 Summary and homework
After all the activities I will invite students to make a summary together with me what we have learned today according to the main information on the blackboard.
As for homework, students need to surf on the Internet about the rare animals and write their opinions about how to protect them. Share next class. It can help students not to be afraid of sharing what they know and arouse their interest in new knowledge.
