英语翻硕常见问答
Q3:Explain literal translation and free translation and give some examples.
A3:The literal translation is also called direct translation. When we use the literal translation, we do not alter the original words or sentences, we keep the sentiments and style of the original, and we reproduce the ideological content and the style of the original works and retain as much as possible the figures of speech.
On the other hand, free translation is an alternative approach generally used to convey the meaning and spirit of the original without trying to copy its sentence patterns or figures of speech.
For instance, the sentence “Little fish does not eat big fish.” It can be translated as “小鱼吃不了大鱼” by using literal translation, while it can also be “胳膊拧不过大腿” if we translate it with free translation. This sentence may be translated in both ways, while other sentences can only be translated in either way. For example, “It rains cats and Dogs”, we’d better translate it as “大雨滂沱”, rather than “天上下猫和狗”.
That’s all. Thank you.
